Journey is the fruit of collaboration between two musicians, Massoud Shaari, a traditional Iranian musician and a virtuoso of Persian Setar and Christophe Rezai, a French-Iranian composer of European culture.

Journey is introduced under the form of five pieces for Setar evoking four different modalities and therefore four difference ambiences of traditional Persian music. The Indian Tabla, closely linked to the Setar, takes us further to the east towards Indian tradition, which has many common points with Persian music. Furthermore the accompaniment by classical and contemporary orchestral formations takes us to the West towards the "European musical tradition" of the 21st century. Somehow it is a journey across the world of Indo-European cultures.

About the Artists:

Massoud Shaari: Born in 1961 in Tehran, Iran, he started playing Santur at the age of 13 after which he turned to Setar under the supervision of Dariush Talai. In 1982 he started practicing the Tar with Master Mohammad Reza Lotfi and Master Bahari, but his vocation for playing Setar became most apparent under the teaching of Master Alizadeh.

For the past ten years, he has been teaching Setar and theory of traditional Persian music in Azad University, "Kamkar" musical center and other private and public musical centers.

Shaari has performed in many concerts in Iran and abroad as a solist (Beirut, Belgium, Italy) as as in the ensembles of Hossein Alizadeh and Shahram Nazeri. SO far he has recorded four albums (solos and a duo for setar and tabla). Shaari has also assisted Christophe Rezai in the composition of the Persian part of the "Peace Anthem for the 3rd Millenium" in June 2000.

Christophe Rezai: Born in Toulouse, France in 1966 of a French mother and Iranian father, he studied in music (piano, singing, theory) alongside engineering and marketing.

Since 1997, Christophe has created the music for over 150 TV advertisements in Iran, in collaboration with Reza Asgarzadeh (his associate since 1995). While in Iran, the compositional work of Christophe also includes the music for a feature movie (1996), the music for two short-movies (1999), the music of a TV documentary for Arte (February 2000).

A Tenor himself, in 1996 Rezai formed an ancient music group composed of Iranian musicians called ARIA MUSICA. In collaboration with professional French musicians, for the past two years, he has been organizing concerts of baroque music in Tehran and India.

In June 2000 Rezai unanimously won the first prize at an international composition contest organized by the Italian cultural association "Euromusica". The theme of the contest was "Peace Anthem for the 3rd Millenium".
