eWorld Record's Exclusive Interview with Leila Forouhar

Q: Leila, your newest album is entitled "Story of Mine, Story of Yours". Tell us about your story. How did you become involved in the entertainment industry, and how have you gotten to where you are today?

A: I started my career at the young age of 3, at the Sepahan Theater in Isfahan, Iran with my parents. As a child actress, I played in over 30 movies, the most popular of which was “Soltaaneh Ghalbha”, or “King of Hearts”. At 14, I began my singing career, performing at the famous “Cabaret Miami” in Tehran. In 1986, I left Iran for France, and finally arrived in the United States in 1988 to record my first album, “Makhmaleh Naaz”. Since then, I have successfully released 15 albums.

Q: Many Iranians remember the nostalgic days prior to 1979, when you first entered the music arena, slowly but steadily becoming a star. How does it feel, twenty-two years later, to be one of the most recognized Persian vocalists? Did you ever imagine having such a successful and extensive career?

A: Any artist thrives to be successful, and I am no exception. I have continually worked hard, doing the best I possibly can. I feel the biggest factor for my success is the unwavering support of my fans. This, in itself lies at the center of my motivation. Often times, I take into consideration the issues and challenges they face. My music connects me to my fans, and is a reflection of their everyday lives.

Q: Who were the main influences in your life? To whom do you give most credit to for making you who you are today? Who are your main musical influences? What kind of music do you listen to now, and why?

A: My parents were the greatest influences in my life. My father, Jahangir Forouhar, an acclaimed and respected actor in Iran, taught me many important things. My sister, Fariba, also has played a tremendous role in my life. As my manager and producer, she makes sure everything gets done. My musical influences come from the many talented and gifted songwriters which help me with my music, which are also part my exclusive band. I enjoy a variety of music, especially pop and classical Persian music.

Q: Last year, Googoosh reemerged after two decades of silence and was embraced by the Iranian community. However, Googoosh cast doubt on the current Iranian music industry, and described the "Tehrangelesi" music as static -- unchanged and boring. How do you respond to this, and did you take any offense to the comments?

A: I think most of what she said was not her own words. If Iranian music in Los Angeles is, as she puts it, “boring”, then why did she come here to perform? Today in Iran, the most popular and accepted music is the music which is made right here in Los Angeles – the music which she criticizes. Persian music has improved tremendously since the revolution because of the new techniques and qualities available today. In addition, each country has a different type of musical style, and Iran is no exception. Persian pop music is extremely popular both inside and outside of Iran. Personally, however, I am a fan of Persian Classical music, but ultimately, the people will decide what kind of music they prefer best.

Q: "Story of Mine, Story of Yours" is an album many Iranians in diaspora can relate to. The album narrates many of the pains and joys humanity faces. What made you want to create such a personal, touching album? In what ways is it different from past albums?

A: As I previously mentioned, I always try to think and feel my people’s joys and sorrows, and I feel a part of them. My best inspiration comes from reflecting the views, the struggles and the joys of my fans. Today, we have a lot to say and I always try to speak in accordance with our daily issues. The difference between “Story of Yours, Story of Mine” and other albums is that this album has one composer, the gifted Siavash Ghomaishi, giving it a central melodic theme. In addition, I carefully chose some of today’s greatest lyricists, which only work selectively. Lyricists such as Iraj Janati Ataei, Shahyar Ghanbari, Paksima Zakipour and more have helped make this a truly unique and incredible album.

Q: How do you feel about the situation in Iran today? "Story of Mine, Story of Yours" talks about freedom. Do you ever think you will be free to visit Iran? Do you hope to have a concert there if things change?

A: I don’t feel good about what is going on in Iran today. Iran has a very young population, most of which are under the age of thirty. The youth of Iran are more aware of the changes in the world today then ever, and they have a very clear understanding about freedom. The story of the Iranian people is a story of freedom, peace and love. I would love to return to Iran, but only when my people are free. It will be a dream come true for me to once again perform in our beloved Iran.

Q: What are some of the challenges you face as a popular and loved Persian singer? Are there any times when you just become tired and frustrated, and just want to quit? What do you find most rewarding about doing what you do?

A: The challenges I face, like many other individuals caught in the public eye, is the lack of privacy. I become frustrated when I see negative competition in our industry, but my best reward and what motivates me is the continuous love of my people.

Q: Tell us about upcoming concerts and tours. Where can your fans expect you next?

A: I have a full schedule of concerts and plays in both the U.S.A. and in Europe. In November, I have a tour scheduled with Mr. Parviz Sayyad in the U.S.A. to perform our hit production, “Yek Samad va Doe Leila” or “One Samad and Two Leilas”. The performance will then move on to Europe in December. I also have a concert scheduled at the Los Angeles Civic Auditorium on December 15th. On this note however, the devastating attack on America has affected me greatly. It’s tragic to see so many innocent men, women, and children killed by such a ruthless attack.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans?

A: I want my fans to know that I love them and look forward to seeing them wherever they are, especially in Iran. I wish the best for all my fans and hope I can perform for them in a free and democratic Iran.
